Review of Mazzio's Seafood and Sub sandwiches, Part 2
"Mazzi's Pizza Restaurant" is one of two places in Toronto that is known by the same name. Find additional sources: "Mazzi's" news papers, scholar JSTOR (June 2016) and the website google maps. The restaurant is situated at Yonge and Adelaide streets. I used the Google map home page to locate it. It's about one block from Yonge station. There is a taxi stand on Yonge and John.
I went there with my boyfriend and a couple of friends on an early Saturday morning. The place was quite busy during lunch time but not so much during late night hours or during the cold winter days. My friend who ordered a medium pizza with a medium crust had already finished his pizza by the time we were served. I think he expected to be sat at the bar with a wine and cheese platter and a salad. We all enjoyed our medium pizzas which came with Italian bread sticks. Prices are about C$20 each.
We shared a marinara and meat sauce soup, my boyfriend got the meat sauce while I opted for the marinara. I noticed that their soup came with a very large salad bar. I'm not a big salad person, but the salad bar definitely made me want to try some of the other available choices. The soup itself though was delicious and filled up fast. I also noticed that the place serves their own tortillas, which is nice, but you have to order it separately, which I found annoying.
As a side business, Mazzi sells pasta, pizza and even has a small selection of "specialty pizzas". Of the many specialty pizzas available, the Pizza Margherita may be my favorite. It has a blend of tomato sauce with a thin layer of mozzarella and then topped with a red onion, fresh garlic and pepper strips. For an even more intense pizza flavor, you can add a layer of shredded zucchini to the top.
For starters, the pizza could use just Alfredo sauce, and no tomatoes or mushrooms. If you are going to include other toppings, such as mozzarella, then Alfredo should be the only option. You can bake the Alfredo in a wood fired oven, or you can use it right out of the oven. With the wood fired pizza, you can enjoy lots of chewy texture with a mild pepper and vinegar flavor. The Alfredo sauce on a hot jazz is absolutely divine!
The Chicken Alfredo is also another favorite of mine. With a traditional chicken Alfredo recipe, I was able to include Italian herbs such as oregano, garlic, Rosemary, thyme, parsley, and cumin. I also used olive oil, lemon juice, and a generous layer of shredded cheddar cheese on top. I topped it with a black olives and tomato slices for added taste. In terms of flavors, I would like to mention that both Alfredo and Chicken Alfredo are excellent choices, but I prefer the chicken for its tangy flavor.
I have also enjoyed several different kinds of pastas at Mazzio's including the Chicken Gnocchi. For the gnocchi, I opted for a wheat tortilla, reduced calorie butter, shredded chicken, and shredded asparagus. I baked the pasta in a hot oven and added a generous helping of sage, olive oil, chicken broth, and chopped scallions. It was delicious!
Overall, Mazzio's is a terrific Italian restaurant that offers a variety of expanded menu items, some of which I had never tried before. The pizza, salad bar, and pasta dishes are great, but thebest part of the night (besides the appetizers) is the business approach. For an easy going, casual dining experience that's priced well below average, I highly recommend Mazzio's.
